GEPS No 01/17: Fundamentals of German European Policy
This first paper of the new German European Policy Series (GEPS) provides an overview of the evolution of German European policy. The authors Katrin Böttger and Mathias Jopp argue that even though German European policy – against the backdrop of numerous crises – has proven to be of a pragmatic, flexible nature, it nevertheless has largely maintained base lines of continuity. The paper reflects on how the membership of the European Union has shaped Germany’s capacity to act in the world over the past decades and outlines leitmotifs of Germany’s European policy.
