Policy Brief „Approaching the German Federal election: The Traditional Parties break the trend and stay in front” published

In the latest DIIS Policy Brief “Approaching the German Federal election: The Traditional Parties break the trend and stay in front”, Fabrizio Tassinari, Senior Researcher at the DIIS, and Sebastian Tetzlaff, Research Associate at the IEP, provide an analysis of the electoral campaign in Germany and the ramifications of large parties adopting positions traditionally held by populist parties. In this respect, the sustained popularity of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) stands contrary to a trend within Europe whereby the political landscape has undergone significant shifts to the detriment of established parties, as witnessed in the last elections in the Netherlands and France.
