Shaping the Future of Europe: German Pre-Presidency Conference Virtual Edition 2020

On 1 July 2020, Germany will take over the presidency of the Council of the European Union for six months. In view of this upcoming task, Institut für Europäische Politik (IEP) in cooperation with TEPSA (Trans European Policy Studies Association) will organize the “German Pre-Presidency Conference – Shaping the Future of Europe” on 25 and 26 June 2020. Due to the circumstances of the Corona-Pandemic this conference will feature in a virtual edition.
During the conference, high-level experts and participants will discuss in an innovative way the complete package of topics relevant to the German Presidency beyond economic and social recovery ranging from the differentiated future of the EU after Brexit, the European Green Deal, enlargement policy and social policy to institutional reforms in times of crisis management, migration policy and the EU’s external relations. TEPSA recommendations for the German EU Council Presidency as well as “young ideas” from the #EngagEUrCouncil project will flow into the panel discussions. High-ranking representatives from politics and civil society as well as members of the TEPSA network and IEP Academic Advisory Board will take part in the event.
NOTE: With the aim of inhibiting the spread of the corona virus, the event will take place as an online debate.
Pre-Presidency Conferences (PPCs)
The Pre-Presidency Conferences (PPCs) are TEPSA’s flagship activity. They take place twice a year in the capital of the country holding the Presidency of the Council of the EU prior to the beginning of its mandate.
The main aim of TEPSA’s Pre-Presidency Conferences is to bring together academics and researchers from the broad TEPSA network, policy-makers, media and civil society in order to discuss the agenda and challenges of the upcoming Council Presidencies. TEPSA Pre-Presidency conferences constitute a major platform for communication and exchange between policy-makers and academia.
Prior to the event, TEPSA researchers formulate recommendations to be presented to high-level officials of the government concerned in a plenary session. The conferences actively involve civil society and media actors, who are able to interact with practitioners and academics. Finally, the insights gained during these conferences and seminars directly feed into future research on the EU and into EU policy making. Thanks to their genuinely European and transnational nature and to the involvement of civil society, TEPSA’s Pre-Presidency conferences actively contribute to shaping a European public sphere.
The last TEPSA Pre-Presidency Conference took place in Zagreb, Croatia on 28–29th November 2018.
