The COVID-19 pandemic has had far-reaching consequences beyond the health crisis itself. The economic impact is proving particularly severe, causing the largest global recession in history. The already fragile Ukrainian economy, which had made significant progress since 2015, has been particularly hit hard. Ukraine is expected to experience the steepest economic downturn of the six EU Eastern Partnership (EaP) countries with the IMF forecasting a 7% decline of its GDP in 2020. In addition, Ukraine has seen a significant drop in foreign direct investment since the outbreak of the pandemic. And large turnover losses for local companies are just one of many unintended consequences of the quarantine. Measures to mitigate the economic impact have already been taken by the Ukrainian government. Yet, whether those actions will be sufficient to prevent a severe economic crisis remains open.

We are pleased to announce that the 20th Ukraine Breakfast debate on “COVID-19 in Ukraine: Economic Consequences for Foreign Investment and Local Businesses” will take place online on Thursday, 5 November 2020, 09.30–11.00 AM (CET) in partnership with the European Investment Bank (EIB) as part of the IEP-EIB Breakfast Debate Series.

Please note that the event will be held in English.
